1995 fue declarado, por iniciativa de la UNESCO, Año de las Naciones Unidas para la Tolerancia, y en su transcurso se realizó una campaña mundial en favor de la tolerancia y la no violencia. El Día Internacional de la Tolerancia tuvo su origen en el impulso de ese año.
El desarrollo de la tolerancia y la confianza en las diversas comunidades no se logra de la noche a la mañana; es algo que requiere tiempo y esfuerzos. Establecer la tolerancia supone el acceso a la educación. La intolerancia suele tener sus raíces en la ignorancia y el temor: temor a lo desconocido, al “otro”, a otras culturas, religiones y naciones. La intolerancia está también estrechamente ligada a un sentimiento exacerbado de autoestima y orgullo, nociones enseñadas y aprendidas a edad temprana. Por tanto, en los próximos años tenemos que hacer más hincapié en educar a los niños acerca de la tolerancia, los derechos humanos y las libertades fundamentales.
Con este motivo la Oficina Municipal de Tetuán en colaboración con Servicio de Convivencia Intercultural en Barrios, celebraron el día a través del taller «Desmontando Tópicos». El taller se desarrolló en un ambiente muy participativo gracias a la asistencia de 17 personas de distintas nacionalidades.
