El Día Internacional para la Erradicación de la Pobreza ha sido observado cada año, a partir de 1993, desde su declaración por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas, con el propósito de promover mayor conciencia sobre las necesidades para erradicar la pobreza y la indigencia en todos los países, en particular en los países en desarrollo, necesidad que se ha convertido en una de las prioridades del desarrollo.
Tema 2016: De la humillación y la exclusión a la participación: Poner fin a la pobreza en todas sus formas
El objetivo de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo Sostenible de «poner fin a la pobreza en todas sus formas en todo el mundo» reconoce explícitamente que esta es el resultado no de la falta de una sola cosa, sino de muchos diferentes factores interrelacionados.
Esto significa que para entender completamente la pobreza en sus múltiples dimensiones, debemos ir más allá de observarla como la falta de ingresos o lo que se necesita para el bienestar material, como la alimentación, la vivienda, la tierra y otros activos.
El tema de este año, seleccionado en consulta con los activistas, la sociedad civil y las organizaciones no gubernamentales, destaca lo importante que es reconocer y hacer frente a la humillación y la exclusión que sufren las personas que viven en la pobreza.
